Birds of Sedgewick park
These
images were taken over a period of six days from January 3rd-9th.
Initially I saw eight warblers (five species) in the area east of the sewage treatment facility - the Nashville and Cape May
dissappeared around January 6th along with two of the Orange-crowned
Wablers leaving a Yellow-rumped, Orange-crowned, Bay-breasted and two or
three each of Ruby and Golden Crowned Kinglets. Daytime Temperatures varied from -6C to +6C. On the cold days with snow covered ground the Warblers were getting wind blown
insects from the direction of the sewage cells which were hitting the fence and falling to the snow bank or feeding on the clear pavement near the sewage cells. Occasionaly I found an Orange-crowned and Nashville pecking through the outer skin at the pulp and inner seed of shriveled
Honeysuckle berries. As the weather became mild and the snow melted leaving exposed ground the Warblers stayed in the wooded area feeding low in the shrubs or on the ground. They would often
feed in company with other Warblers and when one returned from roost the others would appear shortly. Seldom did they perch higher than ten feet allowing for eye level and lower images.
Raptors in the area were Cooper's hawk, Sharp Shinned and Red-tailed hawk though they were not seen every day. Twenty odd Robins were feeding on the ground and like numbers of Starlings would appear.
The sewage cells harboured Mallards. A Carolina Wren was heard though seldom seen. Several Cardinals, Dark eyed Juncos, Gold finches and Tree Sparrows were present. |
